Disney’s Art of Animation Resort Construction Update, Pop Century Resort – Photos and Video

Hi everyone!

We were at Disney’s Pop Century Resort (below, left)  yesterday to see family, and spent an extra couple of hours taking photos and video of the upcoming Art of Animation Resort (formerly it would have been Disney’s Pop Century Legendary Years, but it was never completed). We went to the 4th floor of a number of buildings to get photos and video of the construction (below, right).

The buildings themselves appear to be nearly untouched, with the years of the original resort still displayed on the main building (below, left and right). However, there was quite a lot of work around the grounds of the resort.

Video #1 – Disney’s Art of Animation Resort Construction (Formerly Pop Century Legendary Years) 9/2/10 – This is one of three videos we took yesterday of the construction at the upcoming Disney’s Art of Animation Resort. The Pop Century Legendary Years were never finished, and the building is now being prepped for the upcoming resort to be opened in 2012.

A worker walks through the construction area (below, left), and the “20 and 30” is in full view (below, right).

A close-up of the numbers (below left and right), they will eventually be taken down for new theming. Originally the Legendary Years was supposed to open after the Classic Years, but 9/11 brought the construction to a halt and it’s been sitting pretty much dormant ever since. The great thing is that this new resort will have value resort family suites, something that the All Star Music also offers to guests (but not as an entire resort).

A closer look at the 20 and 30 (below left and right). From the Disney press release announcing the project: Disney’s Art of Animation Resort will be one-of-a-kind, featuring family suites designed around four themes: The Lion King, Cars, Finding Nemo and The Little Mermaid. Crowned by a 35-foot-tall model of King Triton, the family-friendly resort will have themed room interiors in its nearly 2,000 new units1,120 family suites in The Lion King, Cars and Finding Nemo wings and 864 themed rooms in The Little Mermaid wings. Suites will have both a living room and a bedroom”.

Video #2 – Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Video #2 (Formerly Pop Century Legendary Years) 9/2/10 – This is #2 of three videos we took yesterday of the construction at the upcoming Disney’s Art of Animation Resort.

Looking down from the 4th floor of one of the Pop Century buildings (below left and right), you can see work going on towards making the Art of Animation Resort a reality (scheduled to open in 2012).

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror just barely peeks out over one of the guest buildings (below, left). These buildings (including the one at below, right) were never finished and never used.

A closer look at the buildings (below left and right), there is plastic over many of the windows. More from the press release:Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, the 26th resort at Walt Disney World, will be one-of-a-kind, with themed building exteriors and room interiors, and larger-than-life icons from the animated films in the courtyard areas. To be located next to Disney’s Pop Century Resort, all of the themed suites and rooms at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort are expected to open by the end of 2012.”

Video #3 – Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Video #2 (Formerly Pop Century Legendary Years) 9/2/10 – This is video #3 of 3 that we took from the Pop Century of the upcoming Art of Animation resort.

We walked up to an area in the Pop Century parking lot that allowed us a view of this guest room building (below, left), including the first floor (below, right).

The front of the Pop Century Resort has these neat year totems (I am not sure if that is what to call them, but that is what they remind me of, below left!) I can imagine what the matching set would have looked like had the Pop Century Legendary Years been completed. We passed by the giant sized cell phone with also has WDW-Disney on it’s screen (maybe to start dialing for reservations for the new resort).
