Backstage Magic with Mickey Mouse at Town Square Theater – New Meet & Greet at the Magic Kingdom – Photos & Video

Hi everyone!

We went to the Magic Kingdom in hopes of getting into the soft-opening today of the new Backstage Magic with Mickey Mouse meet and greet – and it was open all day!  The newly renamed Town Square Theater (formerly Exposition Hall) is the setting for this new attraction (below, left) that also includes a meet-and-greet with the Disney Princesses. The lobby is beautiful with tile that includes “1901“, the birth year of Walt Disney (below, right).

Our first visit was with Mickey and Minnie, in their backstage area that is used between Mickey’s magic performances. We never waited more than 10 minutes for Mickey (below, left), it was very slow today as this meet-and-greet won’t be on the schedule until Friday’s official opening. We visited them 4 times, and twice there was no wait (below, right).

In the queue, there are pieces of artwork – some that are reminiscent to the Enchanted Artwork on the Disney Dream (below left and right). There is a difference, though.  The artwork on the Disney Dream have sensors and activate as guests approach. These pieces (the ones that do come to life) are randomly set off.

In the backstage area that Mickey and Minnie meet guests at, there is a wardrobe and trunk – each that have stickers on them (below left and right). Besides the Club 33 and Castaway Cay stickers, there is a Grand Floridian sticker, one of Mira Costa, and more to represent all the locations that have Disney Theme Parks!

We were very fortunate that it was very slow today for the meet-and-greet!  The first few times we met Mickey and Minnie, we just had one or two minutes to get photos of them as well as everything else in the room! The fourth time, we had nearly 10 minutes, and took many photos of Mickey and Minnie around the room (below, left) as well as other details. Don’t expect 10 minutes (we were very lucky), it’s good to learn where some of the tributes and details are so that you can see them in the couple of minutes you’ll likely have there.

Mickey’s wardrobe features his outfit, including magic wands and shoes (below, left). Can you see the hidden Mickey in his case of Magic tricks? (below, right)

This is a detail we’d not likely have figured out ourselves quickly (below, left). The items on the shelf represent the Walt Disney World Parks. From left to right: Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and the Magic Kingdom. The Crystal Ball has Madam Leota’s name on it. The letter (below, right) is from J. Thaddeus Toad Motors, LTD and signed by Angus MacBadger.

Two more references for Disney fans include “Tuppence” on the bag (below, left), referring to Walt’s favorite song, “Feed the Birds” from the film Mary Poppins. The bird on the right is named Joyce, a tribute to longtime Imagineer Joyce Carlson (below, right). It also is reminiscent of the bird in Journey into Imagination – you pass it, and the bird disappears.

The bottle on the left says “Madam Mim’s Potion and Spells” (below, left). And the parrot cane belongs to Mary Poppins!  (below, right)

Mickey checks on the disappearing rabbits (below, left), and Mickey and Minnie wave goodbye as we finally leave! We actually tried to say goodbye a few times but they kept wanting to show us more… it was amazing and can be seen in the video below! (below, right)

The shop is very well themed, one of the first things you see is The Saw of Dread (below, left). And there is even a tribute to Mickey’s house from the former Mickey’s Toontown Fair (below, right).

The Tank of Terror (below, left) refers back to one of the pieces of artwork in the lobby. And each of the three named magic tricks in the shop have a “WED Illusioneering” nameplate (below, right).

Video #1 – Mickey Mouse and Minnie – Town Square Meet & Greet 3/30/11 Opening Day – Surprise Room Tour! – We met Mickey and Minnie in their new home for this soft opening at the Town Square Theater (officially it opens on Friday). We went when it was very slow, and ended up with a tour from Mickey and Minnie themselves! There are so many wonderful tributes, but don’t expect to see most of them when you visit – this will give you an idea though on where to look.

The Disney Princesses meet and greet took a little longer to get into – about 20 minutes, but I expect it will be much longer soon. There is trivia in the queue (below, left).  Three princesses greeted us, including Princess Aurora (below, right).

Belle poses for a photo (below, left), with a mural with Cinderella Castle behind her. We then visited with Cinderella (below, right). These are both wonderful meet-and-greet opportunities, detail rich and should be extremely popular.

Video #2 – Disney Princesses Town Square Theater Meet & Greet 3/31/11 Opening Day Magic Kingdom – We met the Disney’s Princesses during the soft opening of the new meet and greet at the Town Square Theater at the Magic Kingdom!
