Walt Disney World Speedway / Richard Petty Driving Experience – Photos and Video

Hi everyone!

This has been a busy (but terrific) week, and included a visit to the Walt Disney World Speedway. Considering that I’ve been a NASCAR fan all of my life, and a huge Disney fan since I can remember, I’m surprised it took me this long to visit and that it took a special Annual Passholder offer to get me there! We visited on March 31st (below, left), the last day of the passholder free ride-along (how is that for a great passholder perk?) You can see the Richard Petty Driving Experience car out on the track (below, right).

It wasn’t too busy when we arrived (below, left), but it started filling up soon after. We had to sign a waiver before driving (below, right) and then we were pointed out the rack to get our driver’s suit. From what we have heard, the passholder offer has been  a huge success for the Speedway!

I stopped to get my photo taken (below, left) in front of pictures of celebrities who’ve been part of the Richard Petty Driving Experience (some photos were not from the Walt Disney World location). There are many other Richard Petty Driving Experience locations around the country. We were given a flash drive (below, right) to wear until we were in the car, to store our information as well as the ride video.

There is an aerial photo of the Walt Disney World Speedway – also dubbed “The Mickyard” (below, left) on the wall. Heading outside, there is a tent set up with some bleacher seats for guests who are waiting or watching (below, right).

The sign (below, left) points to the Richard Petty Ride-Along entrance. There are two different types of experiences – either you ride with a professional driver, or you take the wheel and drive around the track. The latter is more expensive and takes some time to learn how to be safe and handle the cars, and now that I’ve tried riding, I’m definitely wanting to try driving!

The Kings Commandments of Racing” is posted at the track (below, left). The Speedway is very much into safety, and the gear used includes the Hans neck device (below, right).

It was much easier than I expected to get into the car (below, left) and I was soon seated for my 3 laps around the track topping out at about 140mph (below, right).

The cars are based on actual NASCAR vehicles, with the corresponding sponsors (below, left). The MnM’s car at speed around the track (below, right).

While we were there, only one or two cars were on the track at the same time until a group of newly trained drivers joined the field.  Even then, many more cars were parked (below, left) than driving (below right) at any given time.

I really enjoyed sitting and watching the cars go by (below, left). Spectators are welcome anytime free of charge!

The phone number for the Richard Petty Driving Experience is displayed on a car (below, left). The short walkway back to the back entrance is below, right.

You can purchase an in-car DVD or the photo that is taken of you in the car (below left and right). There was absolutely no hard sell on this – barely even a soft sell, and we really appreciated that. I think if I did the full driving experience, I’d consider buying the DVD and maybe even the picture too!

drivers suits were hanging on a rack, and there were many fewer when this picture was taken than when we arrived (below, left). There was a classroom set up for guests who were taking part in the full driving experience (below, right).

Video #1 – Richard Petty Driving Experience / Walt Disney World Speedway – A clip from the speedway, we were able to do the ride-along for free as part of being an annual passholder (that ended on 3/31). It was really fun!

Video #2 – Richard Petty Driving Experience / Walt Disney World Speedway – Clip of a car at speed on the Walt Disney World Speedway.
